For many, a target as we age into our later years is to maintain or even improve our quality of life and be able to have some control towards the end. After all, we are mortal beings; no one gets out alive. There are no right or wrong answers...we have choices to make, if we care to. This talk will provide an overview of end-of-life issues and options and review what it takes to have the kind of death you want. Although there are no guarantees, figuring out one's values and discussing them with loved ones, understanding one's rights and how to exercise them through advanced care planning, being familiar with the care system, and knowledgeable about end-of-life options significantly increases the chances of things going your way. There will be a resource table and plenty of time for Q and A and frank discussion about these important issues.
Barak Wolff, MPH is a mostly retired long-time public health leader in NM who worked with Rural Health, EMS and Trauma Systems, and as the Director of the Public Health Division in the NM Department of Health. Upon retirement from state government, Barak served as an analyst for the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee for 20 years. For the last 14 years, Barak has been deeply involved with end-of-life issues and is a founding Board Member of End of Life Options New Mexico, a statewide nonprofit, created to help implement the Elizabeth Whitefield End-of-Life Options Act passed in 2021. He is grateful for the opportunity to provide education, help improve our care systems and support New Mexicans in the end-of-life decisions.
