In her talk, Graciela Binimelis de Raga will describe some basic concepts of weather versus climate, in order to understand what are the factors that lead to the develoment of some of the extreme events that are part of Earth's climate. She will also discuss the changes observed in their frequency of occurrence and their intensity. She will talk about the natural variability of the climate and how those events are modulated by large scale oscillations present in Earth's climate. She will also address how experts can distinguish between the natural and the anthropogenic forcings and what changes are expected under the different scenarios of anthropogenic forcings.
Graciela was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and came to the USA to attend graduate school in atmospheric sciences in Seattle. She worked as a scientist in several countries. She is now close to retiring from the National University of Mexico where she is a Senior Scientist and full Professor at the Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change Institute. She is well known for her work on air quality, clouds, severe weather and their interactions with climate.
Since the pandemic began, she has become a resident of Taos.
